GOAL: To familiarize pharmacists with current developments regarding iron deficiency anemia.

OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this article the pharmacist should be able to:

  • List the procedure for diagnosis and preventive measures;
  • Discuss the medical management of iron deficiency anemia including the differences between oral iron preparations and the IM and IV route of administration; and
  • Provide patient counseling on the optimal treatment of iron deficiency anemia.
