Football players can get a concussion regardless of the level of play or how hard they are hit. According to a report in the online journal Neurosurgery, football concussions can occur from almost any type of head impact and during any type of play, including practice.

Dr. Kevin M. Guskiewicz, PhD, and colleagues at the University of North Carolina embedded accelerometers and telemetry devices in the helmets of 76 collegiate players. The study resulted in bad news and good news for football players. The bad news is that the threshold for concussion may be lower than originally predicted. The good news: Many players had no concussions when impacts were higher than the predicted threshold.
