Silver Spring, MD — The FDA has approved four vaccines against the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. Early data from multiple clinical studies indicate that the trial vaccines produced a robust immune response in most healthy adults 8 to 10 days after a single dose. The vaccines will be manufactured by CSL Limited, MedImmune LLC, Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics Limited, and sanofi pasteur Inc. The vaccines are being produced in formulations with and without thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative. Vaccines that work against three seasonal flu virus strains have started to be administered nationally, but unfortunately they do not have any effect against the H1N1 virus.
