Researchers from Missouri State University and St. Louis-based Donald Danforth Plant Science Center found ways to genetically enhance grape plants that produce resistance to fungal diseases. Their research centered on the Norton and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties.

The investigators said that many of the antioxidants found in plants are classified as polyphenols, with resveratrol considered one of the most widely known polyphenols found in the skin of red wine grapes. Laboratory testing has revealed that resveratrol has anticancer, antiviral, antiaging, and anti-inflammatory effects. They are also investigating polyphenols' activity on pain management.
