Diabetes Overview
Diabetes mellitus is defined as a chronic, complex heterogeneous metabolic disorder characterized by impaired insulin secretion and varying degrees of peripheral insulin resistance leading to hyperglycemia. Over time, hyperglycemia can cause a host of health-related complications, including vascular disease, retinopathy, peripheral neuropathy, nephropathy, and increased susceptibility to infection. Diabetes Epidemiology
The CDC estimates that 37.3 million individuals in the United States have diabetes, and approximately 96 million people are considered prediabetic. Despite diagnosis and treatment advances, the incidence of this multifaceted, complex chronic metabolic condition has risen in the U.S. and globally in the past 2 decades.
