Hypothyroidism Associated
With Alzheimer’s and Cerebrovascular Disease?

Thyroid-hormone disease is associated with cognitive impairment. While thyroid-hormone dysfunction is linked to an increased risk of dementia in the older population, there are no known underlying mechanisms confirming a possible association between these disease states. A recent study evaluated the association between common cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative pathologies and clinical hypothyroidism. Read more.

Study Highlights Hypothyroidism and Mortality in Hemodialysis
Comorbidities such as diabetes, heart failure, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cancer are common in patients with chronic kidney disease, particularly in those receiving hemodialysis (HD). These issues are associated with all-cause mortality in this patient population, and hypothyroidism is often associated with many of the same comorbidities. A study investigates the impact of comorbidities and hypothyroidism on all-cause mortality in HD patients. Read more.

Subclinical Hypothyroidism and Link to Hyperprolactinemia
Hyperprolactinemia is an endocrine disorder involving the hypothalamic-pituitary axis in which the pituitary gland produces increased prolactin levels. Studies have shown that prolactin secretion is stimulated by thyroid-releasing hormone, resulting in a possible relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism and hyperprolactinemia. In addition, the combination of these two disease states has been associated with ovulatory dysfunction leading to infertility. Read more.
