New Guidelines Help Diabetes Patients Avoid Hypoglycemia

For type 1 diabetes patients, as well as type 2 diabetes patients prescribed insulin or sulfonylureas, avoiding hypoglycemia is a constant concern. New guidelines from the Endocrine Society urge greater use of new drug formulations of insulin and glucagon to treat and manage hypoglycemia as well as the adoption of more technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring to keep track of blood sugar levels. Vaccinated Inpatients Less Likely to Die of COVID-19

Vaccine recipients who get infected with COVID-19 and are hospitalized are less likely to require intensive care, more likely to have a shorter hospital stay, and less likely to die in the hospital than those who were not vaccinated. That is according to a new study that provides a strong response to “anti-vaxxers” who claim vaccines to combat SARS-CoV-2 are not effective. Read more.

Additional Evidence That Metformin Reduces Cancer Risk

A large study of medical records at the Veterans Healthcare System found that the incidence of any cancer was 19% lower among 55- to 64-year-olds who took metformin compared with their peers who took sulfonylurea. The difference was even more dramatic for hematological cancers according to the authors, who made an “urgent” call for randomized clinical trials to confirm their findings. Read more.
