Silver Spring, MD—Based on the lack of evidence that OTC antibacterial soap products prevent illness more effectively than soap and water, the FDA has issued a proposed rule requiring manufacturers of antibacterial soaps to provide more substantial data demonstrating the safety and efficacy of their products compared with soap and water. Antibacterial soaps contain chemicals such as triclosan and triclocarban, which may carry unnecessary risks. There are indications that these ingredients may contribute to bacterial resistance to antibiotics and also may have unanticipated hormonal effects. These concerns warrant further investigation, according to the FDA. The proposed rule does not apply to hand sanitizers, hand wipes, or antibacterial soaps used in healthcare settings such as hospitals.
