GLP-1 RAs Do Not Cause Postoperative Respiratory Complications

The American Society of Anesthesiologists recommends that glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) be withheld for up to a week in patients who are undergoing surgery, but a new research letter suggests that might not be necessary. The letter reports no differences in postoperative respiratory symptoms in patients taking the diabetes/weight-loss drugs versus those who did not when they had to undergo emergency surgery. Thyroid Dysfunction Appears to Affect Myocardial Disease

Thyroid dysfunction is linked to myocardial disease in older adults, even if it is subclinical, according to a new study. The researchers suggested that subclinical and overt hypothyroidism were associated with abnormalities of blood biomarkers consistent with diastolic overload and myocardial necrosis, respectively, while subclinical hyperthyroidism was also associated with myocardial fibrosis and decreased left atrial strain.
